History’s Toy Chest
What did kids do before video games and TV?  Childhood favorites such as marbles, Toss Across, Old Maid, hula hoops, Twister, and Spirograph return as children learn about the different toys that entertained kids over the decades.  Students learn how inventions such as electricity, rubber, and plastic changed games and entertainment over the years.  A fun game of BINGO is transformed into an interactive history lesson highlighting games and activities from history’s toy chest.  This lesson on toys and their colorful history would not be complete without students creating a toy of their own – a Mr. Potato Head made from real potatoes and clay body parts!

Order in the Courthouse
Judge, jury, bailiff, lawyers, and witnesses all come to life as students participate in a mock trial in Old Red’s 1892 Restored Courtroom.  Students take on the roles and responsibilities of a civil court case while learning about the details of court proceedings, the importance of a trial by jury, and how to create and analyze arguments.  Older students sharpen critical thinking skills and have a unique opportunity to practice public speaking by writing opening statements, question witnesses, and crafting closing arguments through the characters they create while younger students learn about various roles as they try on different “hats” in the courtroom.  Students of all ages will enjoy learning about our justice system in a fun and interactive way.

Big Ideas in Big D
From computer chips to corny dogs, students learn about the exciting inventions from the Dallas area including Texas Instruments’ integrated circuit, 7-Eleven and the Slurpee, Fletcher’s Corny Dog, and the Frito Corn Chip.  Through a variety of hands-on stations, students investigate important “firsts,” explore the economic impact of production and consumption, and identify Dallas inventors who impacted history.  Creating inventions of their own, engaging in a transportation timeline, investigating historical photographs, and designing advertisements are all part of the fun and excitement of the inventions workshop.
